SOLACE out now

SOLACE, solopiano album by Stefan Rusconi

My way back to music was a way back to myself // In July 2016, I found Paul L. dead in his hotel room. My fellow musician and friend was unexpectedly taken from his life while on tour. I was so shaken by this event that I collapsed six months later. Of course I was deeply saddened, but it also brought back traumatic fears of death that I had experienced as a child. Suddenly I was once again the abandoned victim from back then. These dark feelings – I didn’t understand them, didn’t want them. Everything fell apart: relationships with loved ones, projects, music, dreams, fatherhood. Caught up in daily panic, I became totally incapable of acting. Everything was alien to me. Zero prospects. Who was I? Why was I alive? I kept trying to somehow get out of this endless maelstrom, out of the past. And then – almost unnoticed at first – my surroundings got through to me again, sounds and words touched my innermost being. I increasingly felt that I was no longer alone. That all these years since Paul’s death – 9 to be precise – I had never actually been alone. I began to accept myself, reclaimed myself, light came into my life. And above all: I made music again. SOLACE is my thanks to all those who have helped me over the past few years, who have endured me, who have supported me. With tender looks, loving words, gentle touches. SOLACE would like to give you back some of the comfort and hope – everything that I had lost and have been able to rediscover through you. This album is my encouragement to everyone to never give up and to face your demons. It is my invitation to go deep into the inner darkness and come out stronger. SOLACE will be digitally released on October 25th 2024.

„Freedom Piece I“ by Jared Gradinger, 2024

Music video created by Jared Gradinger. Jared Gradinger‘s artistic practice centers on utopic visions of a co-creative partnership with Nature: learning from and working directly with its inherent intelligence. While working towards a Symbiocene, decentralizing the human in a more than human world, his work engages the body and the expanded notion of garden as mediums for participation and encounter; fostering horizontal knowledge transference and the dismantling of human-nature dichotomies. The track „Freedom Piece I“ from the solo piano album „SOLACE“ by Stefan Rusconi was released on Oct 25th 2024 on Qilin Records.

„Floating“ by Jonas Meier, 2024

Music video directed by Jonas Meier. Jonas Meier’s film language is somewhere between Wes and Roy Anderson. Even if there is a recognizable documentary approach in some of his works, his visual compositions never remain random. With a strong focus on location and equipment, he creates images that can be categorized between the aesthetics of a fairytale castle and a pragmatic cellar. Far from the mainstream, he creates cinematic worlds in which new harmonies and a unique style emerge from the greatest contrasts. The track „Floating“ from the solo piano album „SOLACE“ by Stefan Rusconi was released on Oct 25th 2024 on Qilin Records.

„Fire“ by Claudia Hill, 2024

Music video directed by Claudia Hill. Edit by Nemo Hill. Claudia Hill is a Berlin-based artist who uses the artistic method of weaving to explore themes of connectivity. She weaves large-scale tapestries on a century-old loom, a practice that evolved out of her work as a costume designer for choreographers and directors for theatre and film. The process of weaving serves for Hill and her collaborators as an empowering act of transformation. Her work is presented internationally in the context of performance and visual art. The track „Fire“ from the solo piano album „SOLACE“ by Stefan Rusconi was released on Oct 25th on Qilin Records.

Social Landscapes, our world told from the perspective of diverse online reviews. „In today’s digital age, social media shapes our perception of places before we even set foot in them. Are we truly at a place when we are there? Or are we there without really being present? Do social media bring us closer together, or do they drive us further apart? Are the boundaries becoming blurred or more rigid?“ In this docu-fiction, director and author Jonas Meier sets out in search of answers. Music direction: Stefan Rusconi. YEW:kids _ by Schubot/Gradinger

Yew:kids by Angela Schubot, Jared Gradinger, Stefan Rusconi

Out of a desire to recognize and interact with non-human beings, Jared Gradinger and Angela Schubot forged a deep relationship with nature and its immanent intelligence. In co-production with HAU Berlin, a cycle of work emerged – »The Nature of Us«. For FRATZ 2019, Gradinger & Schubot adapted their duet »YEW: outside«, set in the public botanical park in Berlin’s district of Pankow, as a variation offering very young children intensive encounters with a plant nature. Soundgarnder: Stefan Rusconi. Music composed and performed by Nature & Stefan Rusconi. An outdoor-Performance for ages 3 and up.

The Nature of Us _ by Schubot/Gradinger

The Nature of Us by Jared Gradinger, Angela Schubot, music by Nature and Stefan Rusconi

The Nature of Us is a declaration of love to Nature. Not in the sense of an exaggeration and glorification of the supposed other, but as an open turn and equal encounter with it. With the aim of initiating a change in collective consciousness, the new choreography by Jared Gradinger and Angela Schubot in conjunction with five human and ten plant performers is a sensitive plea for the dissolution of the human-nature dichotomy. The Nature of Us is the third part of Angela Schubot and Jared Gradinger’s new cycle of work in co-creation with Nature. Here they have invited both human and plant allies as well as a sound and light gardener and finally the audience into a post-human group choreography. On stage, a soil-less garden with multiple voices emerge from sounds and bodies. The Nature of Us searches for a consciousness that neither suppresses nor exaggerates Nature, instead, makes space for a co-creative polyphony. Soundgarnder: Stefan Rusconi. Music composed and performed by Stefan Rusconi.

    Füür _ by Jonas Meier

Füür directed by Jonas Meier. Original music by Stefan Rusconi

In the movie “Füür”, the warming, cozy fireplace receives fantastic and surreal visits from people and animals. Like tableaux vivants, dream worlds are created with a twinkle in the eye, which gradually open up around the open fire. Written and directed by Jonas Meier. Music direction: Stefan Rusconi. Music composed and played by Stefan Rusconi. Additional music played by Tobias Preisig (viol).

Tanzkongress 2019 _ by Meg Stuart

Tanzkongress 2019, artistic director Meg Stuart, music curation by Stefan Rusconi, Marc Lohr

A long lasting affair. Since the beginning of the 20th century, the Dance Congress has repeatedly served the dance community as a moment of pause and reflection to address conflicts and forge alliances. In 2019, a female artist was commissioned to lead the congress for the first time. Meg Stuart hosted a gathering of dance makers in Dresden and beyond, conceived from choreographic and dance considerations and combining the social potential of choreography and dance with the communal energy of a gathering. More than any previous dance congress, this edition sought to find artistic ways of communicating about and in dance. Funded by Kulturstiftung des Bundes. Stefan Rusconi was part of the team and music curation. Together with Marc Lohr (dr) and Doug Weiss (db) he hosted several music interventions.

    YEW:outside _ by Schubot/Gradinger

YEW:outside by Jared Gradinger, Angela Schubot, music by Nature and Stefan Rusconi

The desire to acknowledge and interact with plant consciousness brought Jared Gradinger and Angela Schubot into a deep immersion with nature and its inherent intelligence. In January 2018 “YEW” premiered at HAU Hebbel am Ufer, in the summer of 2018 the two artists adapted the indoor piece to an outdoor setting as part of their new cycle of work “The Nature of Us,” now the show is rerun. An experimental evening of intense encounters with human and non-human collaborators. Soundgardner: Stefan Rusconi. Music played and performed by Nature & Stefan Rusconi

Until Our Hearts Stop _ by Lohr/Halscheidt/Rusconi

Until our hearts stop (Meg Stuart). Music by Stefan Rusconi (p), Marc Lohr, (dr), Samuel Halscheidt (eb)

Music to the dance piece Until Our Hearts Stop by choreographer Meg Stuart. Together with six performers, the musicians-composers Paul Lemp (bass, electronics), Stefan Rusconi (piano, electronics, trumpet) and Marc Lohr (drums, percussion, electronics) were drawn into a creative process that was based upon the breaking of boundaries. Rather than simply guiding the movement, the trio searched for ways in which to influence or strengthen the physical images. Inspiration was taken from a variety of genres and further refined through the search for a new unity. During the performance, the music – which ranges from swirling jazz to in-your-face punk and melancholic soundscapes – randomly rebounds through a space that veers from desolate basement to oppressive nightclub; until nothing but a beating heart remains. Feat Samuel Halscheidt – bass / electronics, Marc Lohr – drums / electronics and Stefan Rusconi – piano / electronics / trumpet

LEVITATION live _ by Montreux Jazzfestival

Tobias Preisig (viol) & Stefan Rusconi (church organ), Montreux Jazz Festival 2017. Montreux Jazz Festival is one of the most famous summer festival in Europe and has existed for many years.

    YEW _ by Schubot/Gradinger

YEW by Jared Gradinger, Angela Schubot, music by Nature and Stefan Rusconi

The desire to acknowledge and interact with non-human beings brought Jared Gradinger and Angela Schubot into a deep immersion with nature and its inherent intelligence. Rather than a traditional dance piece, with “YEW” they co-create an experimental evening of intense encounters with a plant nature, which they can only describe as a “soilless garden.” They share their interspecies encounters with the audience. Soundgardner: Stefan Rusconi. Music composed and played by Nature & Stefan Rusconi.

    Candy Bomber Vol. 1

Paul Lemp, Thomas Wydler and Toby Dammit of Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Gemma Ray, Jochen Arbeit (Einstürzende Neubauten/Automat), Kid Congo Powers, Toni Kater, Ingo Krauss, Paul Kuchenbuch, Charly Birkenhauer, Andre Vida, Matthew Styles & Stefan Rusconi

Berlin studio collective featuring the late Paul Lemp, Thomas Wydler and Toby Dammit of Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Gemma Ray, Jochen Arbeit (Einstürzende Neubauten/Automat), Kid Congo Powers, Toni Kater, Ingo Krauss, Paul Kuchenbuch, Charly Birkenhauer, Andre Vida, Matthew Styles & Stefan Rusconi.

This is sonic art unimpeded – a wild cocktail of originality, intensity, beauty, sincerity, and stunning freeform musicianship – underscored by a Dada-ist playfulness and motivating force. But this is not a work of chin-stroking abstraction. Here you will hear some of the coolest jams, ones that will peel your face off. Tragically, Paul Lemp died prematurely and unexpectedly in summer 2015, before the Candy Bomber sessions were finished. Krauss and Wydler finished the record shortly after, and despite his passing (and as the Vol. 1 of the title suggests) – intend to continue them in his honour.

    LEVITATION _ by Preisig/Rusconi

LEVITATION, photo by Peter Hoennemannm music by Tobias Preisig (viol) & Stefan Rusconi (church organ)

2015 Tobias Preisig (violin) and Stefan Rusconi (organ) walked into the Gothic Church of Saint-Étienne in Cully, Switzerland and felt dazzled and inspired by the atmosphere there. During five nights of recording in this church they felt a fresh, musical magic emerge, as if secret rooms were opening and time was being stretched. The sounds of their recording, Levitation, were arranged slowly, with a care that being in the church instigated.

Kinder der Sonne _ by Nora Schlocker

Kinder der Sonne, directed by Nora Schlocker, Music by Stefan Rusconi

Maxim Gorky’s “Children of the Sun” is a comedy that has to contend with various elements of tragedy: Heartbreak, madness, suicide, plague and resulting unrest. Gorky wrote this early drama in 1905 in the Peter and Paul Fortress in St. Petersburg. The poet had been imprisoned for his support of revolutionary ideas and his outrage at the sadly famous suppression of a peaceful demonstration by workers against Tsarist Russia, known as “Bloody Sunday”. He meticulously describes the problems of Russian society on the eve of the revolution. Directed by Nora Schlocker. Musical direction and composition by Stefan Rusconi.

UNTIL OUR HEARTS STOP _ by Meg Stuart

Until our hearts stop directed by Meg Stuart, music by Paul Lemp, Stefan Rusconi, Marc Lohr

Choreography by Meg Stuart. Musical direction: Paul Lemp & Stefan Rusconi. Music composed and performed by Paul Lemp/Samuel Halscheidt, Marc Lohr & Stefan Rusconi

In UNTIL OUR HEARTS STOP, six performers and three musicians find themselves in a place that is both a nightclub and an arena: an unreliable, high-octane refuge, a place of desire and illusion. To the sound of throbbing basses, piano and drums – a mix between improvisation and composition – they make optimistic attempts to meet impossible deadlines. For this piece, Meg Stuart drew inspiration from people who retreat from the real world and construct their own, fantastic set of rules. The performers are ‘freaky insiders’, forced to connect in uncomfortable, yet playful ways. Navigating between naivety and despair, they are dreamers who long for reality. In a world in which they fade away and disappear, they feel the urge to seek new forms of appearance.

History Sugar Dream _ by RUSCONI

History Sugar Dream RUSCONI, Claudio Strüby (dr), Fabian Gisler (db), Stefan Rusconi (p) Cover Art by Manon Malan

Sixt album of the band RUSCONI. Claudio Strüby (dr), Fabian Gisler (db) and Stefan Rusconi (p). “History Sugar Dream” is a celebration of RUSCONI’s anniversary as a band. It is also an exploration of the three members’ memories of a time long before they came together to make music. “This album looks back to our childhood,” says the band. “A time when dreams and hopes, fantasy and illusion, were reality. A time of untrammelled playfulness and experimentation.” Deeply refreshing in its disregard for musical boundaries, “History Sugar Dream” offers up a wide-screen panoramic view of planet RUSCONI.

“’History Sugar Dream’ is terrific fun. Ample proof, if proof were needed, that innovation and experiment do not need to be difficult to grasp or hard to listen to in order to be genuinely adventurous.” Hanspeter ‘Düsi’ Künzler, London, 2014

    Twisted (RUSCON) _ by Brändli/Holliger

Music video. The song ‚TWISTED‘ as an extract of the poetic „Expedition History Sugar Dream“ – a playful journey through Switzerland, in which scenes and situations are filled with the sound of RUSCONI’s latest record ‚History Sugar Dream‘ – counterdraft to the well-known music-clip, an episodic film, that puts music-recordings and images into a scenic dialog – with a spatially and timely uncertain ending. It is going to be examined how RUSCONI’s music sounds and echos in different surroundings. The Expedition History Sugar Dream leads you through Switzerland in eight days. Starting at Swissminiatur via Porta Alpina and inside the NEAT, into the backmost „Glarner Land“, to lions and tigers, into a henhouse and an indoor-skifacility. The filmmaker and fotografer Gregor Brändli, being asked by the band RUSCONI in autumn 2013, developed the concept of Expedition History Sugar Dream and together with the artist Jeremias Holliger refined and implemented it. With a seven-headed crew the Expedition started on March 10th 2014.

The Whistler & Hustler Session _ by Lüchinger/Rusconi

The Whilster & Hustler Session by Ephrem Lüchinger (piano) and Stefan Rusconi (piano)

Whistler&Hustler, two gentlemen stepped out of a Magritte painting. Groomed like gentlemen, polite like gentlemen, and ever so slightly sinister, also like gentlemen. Ferrante & Teicher might be the dangerous godfathers of these two. Or maybe Sparks, though Whistler & Hustler do smile, occasionally. And there’s always the Thompson Twins, but we’ll keep that to ourselves. Do we feel safe in the company of these two? Maybe we do, maybe we don’t. Either way, never this side of a Laurel & Hardy movie has a piano been misused, caressed, tortured and loved more than by this duo of elegant miscreants. The idea began to take audible shape. Allowed the use of a school building, Whistler & Hustler spent a summer diving – literally – in and out of their pianos, recording countless fragmentary ideas and grooves, sticking religiously to their self-imposed rule: every single last sound had to have its origin somewhere in the piano. Any trick was allowed. Nothing was too much trouble, as long as the sound was right. Thus, for their super funky version of the Bullitt theme tune, they replaced a piano string with 15 metres of dental floss. The flute effect was achieved by plucking the piano strings with plastic spoons. Once they had collected a laptop full of fragments, they set about bashing them into rhythmic and melodic shape on the computer. Music composed, performed, produced and mixed by Ephrem Lüchinger & Stefan Rusconi

    Revolution _ by RUSCONI

Revolution RUSCONI, Stefan Rusconi (p), Fabian Gisler (db), Claudio Strüby (dr)

Fifth album of the band RUSCONI. Fabian Gisler on bass, Claudio Strüby on drums and Stefan Rusconi on piano. After 3 years signed with a major company (Sony Music) we decided to do everything by ourselfs again. And it feels great! In June 2011, we booked a spacious room in Basel (CH). After Hannes Kumke had provided his wonderful recording-material, the rehearsals — initially intended as an intensive tryout only — turned into a serious recording production. The upshot of June’s get-together are tunes, which reflect our current interests and creative process. On REVOLUTION, you will find us whistling, clapping, scratching, improvising, rattling, and singing; grand piano, drums, double bass, distortion, feedback, space echo, instrumental preparations, and a cassette recorder make REVOLUTION a synthesis of our new musical course and of sound, which we have developed during the last few years while touring. One of the songs features U.S. based guitar player Fred Frith as a special guest.
